Detour Bus began in August of 2019 as a two-person project focused on accessibility-first design in VR. We set out to create an experience that required only one button to play, could support modification to many accessibility needs, and would scale easily, hoping to break away from casual VR games where grabbing objects is the player's main integration.
Starting with a physical prototype made from cardboard and a Hot Wheels car, we devised our signature snap-road-building mechanic, which satisfied all of our goals. Our digital prototype won a grant from the Oculus Launch Pad, featured at DreamHack Anaheim 2020, and was shortlisted for the 2022 Yugo BAFTA Student Awards.
A complete 3+ hour game is now in development by a full team.
